The American Pitbull Terrier and the American Bully are both very similar dogs, and that’s because they are both Pitbull-type dogs. People often confuse the two and even ask if the Pitbull and American Bully are the exact same dog breed. Even all the Pitbull lovers out there can sometimes get confused. Thankfully, there are a few differences that set the two dogs apart.

Origin Of Breeds

Going by the full name American Pit Bull Terrier, the Pit Bull emerged from the cross breeding between the old English Bulldog and English Terrier, around the beginning of the 19th century. Originally from Europe, Pit Bull was initially used for bull baiting, ratting and bloody dog fights, hence the erroneous fame.

Originated from the United States, the American Bully is the mixed breed of several breeds, including the Pit Bull. However, despite having emerged between 1980 and 1990, the American Bully was only recognized in 2013 by the United Kennel Club (UKC).

Muscle Structure

Although both breeds are very strong and muscular, the American Bully tends to have more jumped and toned muscles. Also, thanks to its most striking features — broad and deep chest — they appear stronger and athletic. In addition, the American Bully has strong bones, something else that contributes to the image of muscularity.

Size And Weight

In terms of size of Pit Bull vs American Bully, the two dogs do not differ much. The American Bully and Pit Bull can reach up to 53 cm in height, with the female being smaller in both breeds. However, when referring to weight, the situation changes a lot.

The American Bully weighs between 25 and 45 kg, being much heavier than the Pit Bull. The Pit Bull usually weighs between 13 and 34 kg. This weight difference makes Pit Bull looks smaller and much more muscular , something that makes it easier to differentiate between these two breeds.

Head, Paws, And Tail

These are three body parts that look similar at the first glance, but when you look closely between both breeds, there are some differences.

Firstly, the head. The head of an American Bully is quite remarkable. They’re square in shape, are voluminous, and very striking. To the contrary, the pit bull’s head is more rectangular, with a medium size, being a little wider in the region of the ears.

Final Thoughts

At the first glance, the Pit Bull and American Bully can look quite alike, something that often causes confusion in people. However, there are several differences between these two breeds, from their physical attributes, origin, behavior, and even price.

Despite the differences, both Pit Bull and American Bully are a great companion. They are faithful and affectionate, especially towards their owner. But if you’re looking for a dog that is a little more attached and loves to give an all around company, the American Bully may be the best option.

If you’re looking to have a more adept dog for protection, then a Pit Bull may do better for this task. But have no doubt that nothing prevents this big guy from also being an excellent companion dog!

In conclusion, the choice between the Pit Bull and the American Bully is all depending on what you’re looking for. For all that, it is still important to check and make sure if the dog’s needs can match with your lifestyle before getting one.
